When Every Acre Counts, Half-Rate Won’t Do

The cost of cheap

Since the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) removed efficacy testing in 2013, the door has been wide open for diluted, deceptive stabilizer products to enter the market unchecked. No performance data? No problem…at least for manufacturers. The result: a flood of low-grade products that promise protection, but deliver little more than expensive, colored water.

These so-called stabilizers often contain up to seven times less active ingredient than premium stabilizer products. That means your nitrogen isn’t being protected; it’s being wasted. Your inputs aren’t stabilized; they’re simply padding someone else’s profits.

The damage you don’t see (until it’s too late)

Unlike weed or pest pressure, nitrogen loss is invisible. You don’t always know you’ve been hosed until the yield monitor tells you. And by then, it’s too late. What looked like a good deal at the time turns into lost bushels and lower returns.

Growers across the Prairies are starting to feel it, especially in broadcast-heavy, time-crunched production systems where efficiency is king and windows are tight. When you’re pushing many acres in 120 days, you don’t have time for products that don’t work.

If you’re applying a product with a watered-down formula, don’t expect it to pull its weight. It’s time to stop settling for weak blends and demand better, because when every acre counts, performance isn’t optional.

What proven performance looks like

There are still stabilizers on the market that do what they say. Products like ANVOL™ nitrogen stabilizer, which delivers long-lasting protection against ammonia volatilization by pairing NBPT with Duromide, a KAS patented active ingredient. It’s a dual-action solution with a 31 bu/ac yield advantage in corn trials and the staying power to handle diverse soil conditions.

Or SUPERU™ fertilizer, the preferred premium fertilizer features the highest concentration (46%) of nitrogen available in a ready-to-use, stabilized product.

And for UAN, TRIBUNE™ nitrogen stabilizer offers above and below-ground protection. Its combination of NBPT and KAS patented active ingredient, Pronitridine shields your nitrogen from volatilization, denitrification and leaching. In trials, TRIBUNE delivered a 16 bu/ac yield advantage over untreated UAN while improving tank-mix compatibility and field handling.

There’s too much riding on your nitrogen strategy to settle for weak blends, diluted actives or the lowest bidder with a jug. You deserve better, and so does your crop.

You wouldn’t fuel a combine with watered-down diesel and expect it to run properly. So why use a weak stabilizer on your nitrogen and expect full-season performance?

A growing crisis is threatening long-term nitrogen efficiency: the rise of low active ingredient, underperforming nitrogen stabilizers. They might look the part with a fancy label, slick claims and maybe even a bold name. But under the surface? You’re paying for performance that simply isn’t there.
